Little carpenters
During January our classroom has become a wooden toy shop.
Our activities have begun with story about Pinocchio, wooden doll made by carpenter Geppetto. Book written by a famous italian writter C. Collodi.
Talking with kids about the story and throughout various activities they’ve learned new terms such as joiner, woodcarver, carpenter, trade, sketch, draft.
Wooden materials were offered to the children and they were able to sort that materials by a particular property ( shape, size).
They have carefully compared the wooden materials to find nine equal parts, needed to make the first wooden toy – puzzle.
They glued the frame of the puzzle to the cardboard base and arranged sliding slats inside the puzzle. After a successful practical activity, the art activity of designing the puzzle followed.
Like a real carpenters they first designed a puzzle motive and then drew a sketch on paper with pencil. Then they carefully copied the sketch on wooden puzzles using watercolor art technique.
Puzzles are being used in everyday activities.
The children shown interest in making wooden toys so we agreed to continue the workshop also in February.
